Dental Hygiene

At Desert Oasis Dental, our primary goal is to prevent dental problems, rather than treat them after they occur. That is why Dr. Tran urges you to visit the dentist regularly for exams and cleanings. In addition to polishing and evaluating your teeth, your dentist in Albuquerque will offer tips and guidance for practicing effective dental hygiene.

Is there a right and a wrong way to brush my teeth?

Yes – overly vigorous brushing can be almost as destructive as not brushing enough! For a healthy mouth, place your brush at a 45-degree angle and use small, circular strokes across your teeth. When cleaning the back of your teeth, use up-and-down motions. Be sure to brush all areas, including the sides and chewing surfaces, as well as your tongue.

What type of toothbrush should I use?

A brush with soft bristles is best. Hard bristles can be abrasive and may damage your dental enamel. Every three to four months switch to a new toothbrush. Change your brush sooner if you notice it looking old and frayed.

How often should I visit the dentist?

Typically, we recommend two visits a year. Each appointment will include an exam and cleaning, and we will usually take digital x-rays at one of those visits. If you have a history of dental decay, a diagnosis of gum disease, or another oral health concern, additional appointments may be appropriate.

How does my diet affect my dental health?

It’s no secret that sugar can damage your teeth, but candy is not the only culprit behind dental decay. Frequent snacking is likely to lead to cavities because your mouth does not release as much saliva when snacking as it does during a full meal. You should also drink plenty of water. Not only will this keep you hydrated, but it will also help to wash food and sugars out of your mouth.

Is chewing gum bad for my teeth?

Sugared gum is certainly harmful, but chewing sugar-free gum for 20 minutes after a meal can actually prevent cavities. When you enjoy gum approved by the American Dental Association, it stimulates the production of saliva, which washes away food and bacteria.

How can I prevent cracked teeth?

Cracked teeth are often the result of chronic teeth grinding, or bruxism. If you notice any of the signs of bruxism, you should seek dental treatment right away before your teeth are permanently damaged. Symptoms may include jaw pain and tension, dental sensitivity, chronic headaches, ear pain, and dental erosion. Your Albuquerque dentist will likely provide a custom-made mouth guard to be worn while you sleep.

Sports injuries are another common cause of damaged teeth. If you or your teen play a contact sport, it is important to wear a mouth guard. You can purchase prefabricated mouth guards at the store. However, our custom appliances will be more comfortable and are less likely to impair breathing.
